If the weather in your area is anything like mine, a warm bowl of soup is just the thing you need. Okay, I live in California where it’s a little chilly and rainy, but I know many of you live where it’s much, much colder. Homemade soup is one of the things I most look forward to as the weather turns wintry. I pull out the recipes that have been waiting all summer, get my slow cooker ready, and stock up on ingredients. Each member of my family has their favorite and I have recipes to suit every taste. February 4 is Homemade Soup Day in the U.S. Why don’t you try one of these recipes to celebrate?
Soup can be a main dish if the recipe is hearty enough and you add sides like salad and crusty bead. In the winter, I try to make a soup dinner at least once a week. They are simple, hearty, and warm. Here are 10 of my favorite homemade soup recipes. Enjoy!

1, Slow Cooker French Onion Soup
I found this recipe at www.spendwithpennies.com. My family loved it! And it’s simple and inexpensive to make. You do have to caramelize the onions before putting them in the crock pot, but then you just set it and let it cook all day on its own. Make sure to use dried out bread on top. Fresh bread soaks up the liquid too quickly.
2. Slow Cooker Broccoli Cheese Soup
This one is definitely a kid-pleaser. I found this recipe at www.wellplated.com. I like to use a little less cheese than it calls for. Makes me feel a little healthier, but the recipe already is much lighter than your average broccoli cheese soup. It also has carrots in it…double your veggies!
3. White Chicken Chili
So the name is White Chicken Chili, but this recipe is more soupy than stewish. My son always asks for this one. You can make it in a slow cooker or on the stove top. Most of the ingredients are things I have on stock, but I do have to add limes and cilantro to my shopping lists when I plan on making this. It is delicious! I got it from a cookbook called Our Best Bites. There is also a great website. Be sure to buy an avocado (or two), some tortilla chips and cheese to top this recipe off.
4. Lasagna Soup
This was a big hit with everyone. My family loves lasagna, but sometimes I don’t feel like putting in the time to make it. This fills the craving for lasagna, but takes less time and is lower in calories. It’s a win-win! I found this one at www.afarmgirldabbles.com.
5. Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup
My family’s all-time favorite soup recipe is Creamy Chicken Noodle. However, the Paula Deen recipe I started out with is really not waistline friendly. So I started looking for a similar tasting, but lower calorie version. I found a good one! This recipe is from www.sallysbakingaddiction.com. It’s still creamy and delicious, but with far fewer calories. It’s perfect for cold, rainy days and delicious with some homemade bread. True comfort food!
6. Spinach Tomato Garlic Tortellini Soup
At my house, we call this Christmas Soup because we always eat it on Christmas Eve and because it’s predominant colors are red and green. This is a light soup. 8. One-Pot Chicken Orzo Soup
I found this delicious recipe at www.thecasualcraftlete.com. We used to have a restaurant in my little town that served Greek Lemon Orzo Soup. I loved it. It’s a different twist on classic chicken noodle soup. Give it a try.
